I just completed a resume for a college wrestling coach, and it reignited my passion for writing resumes for coaches and athletic directors. This includes youth coaches, high school coaches, college coaches, and athletic directors at the high school level.
Recent coaching and athletic director resumes completed
In addition to writing the resume and cover letter for this Division I wrestling coach, I have also recently worked with:
A Texas High School Athletics Director seeking a new AD position with another Texas high school.
A Minnesota high school hockey coach seeking an NCAA Division III hockey head coaching opportunity.
A Division III Minnesota baseball coach seeking a DIII baseball head coaching position.
A Division II assistant college football coach seeking an assistant college football coaching position at the DII or DIII level.
The best coaching resumes go beyond wins and losses
When working with the college wrestling coach, I uncovered several achievements that were not included on the most recent version of his resume. I added a total of 32 new skills, achievements, and successes that were previously not on his resume. Think about all of the things you do in your job. You probably forget things that you do everyday because you are focused on coaching or leading an athletics program. So when writing your resume, you can't come up with those unique achievements and they get left off the resume. So then your resume doesn't truly tell your whole story.
I added details about this wrestling coach working with and managing student-athletes in the transfer portal, how the school/university has implemented NIL (name, image and likeness) opportunities and worked with the newly created collective, along with their experience working at the college summer wrestling camps. When I worked with the Texas high school athletics director, I was able to showcase her success in leadership/committee roles within The University Interscholastic League, the governing board of Texas high school athletics, how she came up with creative ways to reduce department operating expenses, fundraising and community engagement strategies, and the leadership development program implemented for all new coaches at the high school. With the baseball coach, I was able to showcase how he built a summer high school developmental league. With the college football coach, I showcased his ability to recruit in Chicago (this coach was at another Midwest school) and put together statistics that showcased the impact he made as the team’s defensive coordinator.
I know that a coach, while judged by fans (and parents!) on wins and losses, has many more responsibilities, duties - and challenges - that go far beyond the role of "coach" or "AD" and coming up with this information can help set you apart in a competitive field of applicants.
If you are a coach or athletics director, I want to hear from you. I am confident I can help create a resume and cover letter that showcases the impact you can make in your next coaching or athletics director role. Your job is to coach and/or lead athletic departments and programs, my job is to take the information you provide me, ask additional questions, and showcase that in your resume.
The key to success with resumes for head coaches, assistant coaches, and athletic directors is to go beyond wins and losses and showcase how one serves as a program leader. I do this through my unique ability to ask the right questions to get the necessary information to succeed in the next role. This can all be done by completing a simple resume revision document I send clients once we get started, and by follow-up questions I then send based on the information provided and/or the role for which you are applying. This can all be done via email, and you can answer on your time when it's convenient for you.
Experience writing about sports, careers, and resumes
I truly don't believe there are any large, or well-known resume writing services that understand the intricacies of these coaching and athletic director positions. With my background following the business of sports and as a sports writer - I've covered amateur, high school, college, and professional sports for newspapers in Minnesota, Iowa, and Wisconsin, and worked as a freelance sports writer for USA Wrestling and USA Hockey, covered MLB for the San Francisco Chronicle, and wrote weekly high school football and basketball notebooks for Max Preps, among many other roles, I stay on top of trends in the fast-paced world of coaching and athletic department leadership. This background covering the world of sports, combined with my nearly 15 years of experience writing the Ask Matt career advice column for Minnesota's largest daily newspaper, the Star Tribune (producing 700+ career and job search articles during this time!) combined with my experience writing about careers and job search topics for Monster, Flex Jobs, Jobscan, Zip Recruiter, College Recruiter, and Lensa, help me stay on top of trends as well as connected to employers and decision makers who share with me what they look for when reading/reviewing resumes. I take that information and apply those strategies to the resumes that I write.
